The energy companies are driving the development of the large-scale battery market in Spain in light of the new draft of the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC). Foreign companies such as the Czech Tesla or the Norwegian EnergyNest, as well as the Spanish companies Rolwind and Magtel, are designing ambitious projects in the country.

The most recent announcement came last week from Tesla Group. They are entering the Spanish market to supply up to 1,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of battery energy storage systems and develop 500 MW of hybrid solar projects. Founded in 1946 in the Czech Republic, this company stands out as a leader in the large-scale battery energy storage sector in Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and Benelux. So far, they have managed to establish an installed capacity of 100 MWh in these regions.

The Cordoba-based company Rolwind, which has established a division dedicated to storage, aims to develop 1,000 MW of storage by 2025. According to data from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, the company is currently planning four installations of around 600 MW in Spain. The largest environmental processing corresponds to two independent battery systems of 200 MW each. One of them is located in Grandas de Salime (Asturias) and the other in Tarifa (Cadiz). It is also developing an isolated installation of 110 MW in the municipality of Álora (Malaga) and another of 100 MW in Solorzano (Cantabria).
